This website features just three of those temporary airfields, RAF Hunsdon and RAF Sawbridgeworth, both in East Hertfordshire, and the USAAF Station 161 at Matching Green Essex. This airfield was built by the Americans themselves for the US Ninth Air force, and their twin engined B-26 Martin Marauder Bombers. Work began in October 1940 and the airfield was to be a sattelite of nearby North Weald under RAF Fighter Command. Work was overseen by Wing Commander Pike. The runways and perimeter track were built by George Wimpey and Sons. The width of the perimeter track was 35 feet, and the runways were of the standard 150 foot.

The site of the bomb dump in nearby Brickles Wood retains the earth blast walls between the bomb storage bays and brick walls, but now covered by undergrowth and small trees, evidence of former buildings in the bomb dump can also be found with only the concrete floors remaining.
